Install Windows Server 2012 R2 on MacBook Pro Retina 15 (late 2013) using Bootcamp

It was a chaotic experience, as officially Bootcamp never support Windows Servers. However, as I have free Windows Servers 2012 from Dreamspark, and I would like to have OneNote installed on my MacBook Pro, so I tried... There were tons of error and after 10 hours I got it up and running except the bluetooth still won't work. Here are my steps (it may or may not work again):

1. In Bootcamp, create the USB disc with Windows Servers 2008 R2 iso first. (Cause there was error when I directly installed 2012)

2. Download DAEMON Tools Lite 4. You will need this later.

3. Install Windows Servers 2008 using Bootcamp. Remember to REMOVE any other USB hard disk, this was one of the problems I encountered during my installation and I have to redo the whole thing again.

4. Install DAEMON Tools Lite 4 on Windows.
  • If you skipped step 2 --
    • the wifi would NOT work at this stage as the wifi service is disabled, I did not attempt to solve this as that needs to be solved again after installing 2012. So it may be easier to download DAEMON using another PC.
    • If you do not have another PC connected to the Internet, you may try to enable Wireless LAN service and re-run Bootcamp installation files, theoretically this would get WiFi working but I am not sure.
5. Mount Windows Servers 2012 R2 iso using Daemon. Install.

6. Install Windows Servers 2012 as a fresh copy (do NOT upgrade, it won't work).

7. After installation, run the Bootcamp installation files. (If you don't mind completing set up with the horrible screen resolution, you can actually skip this step and go ahead to step 8, I believe)

8. Everything should work except wifi (and bluetooth, but I don't use bluetooth so I did not attempt to solve this issue, if you can get bluetooth working, please let me know how to do it! :D ).

9. Enable Wireless LAN service in your server.

10. Re-run Bootcamp installation files.

11. Restart ... and enjoy! Wifi should work now :)

I have googled for a long time and seems many people says can't get 2012 installed using Bootcamp, of they can get that install but Wifi doesn't work, hope this instruction would help. :D

Zotero Sentence Case

One of the best function of Zotero -- Sentence Case!

I think there is a style in EndNote that may serve similar purpose -- but I am not sure if you can stop the style to create reference list with title like "Social pretend play in Korean‐ and Anglo‐American preschoolers" to "Social pretend play in korean‐ and anglo‐american preschoolers". If it is just a style but not changing the title stored, users may need to manually capitalize some titles every time they refresh the reference list. While Zotero sentence case would also automatically convert those K and A in the data to k and a, but I can manually capitalize the K and A easily without worrying to change that again each time I cite in a new manuscript...

(there was also a similar style file for Zotero when it didn't have the sentence case function, but due to the issue mentioned for EndNote above, I end up just change that manually. that's why I am really happy with this new function...)

sem + Graphviz

It is very difficult to draw path diagrams and SEM models in Microsoft Word / Powerpoint. Graphviz is a free program that worth trying out, together with the sem package in R (http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/sem/index.html), drawing path diagrams with loading became a much easier tasks...

Dear iriver customer,
Thank you for contacting iriver customer support.
Yes, Target should be able to provide you with an exchange unit as long as you abide by their return policy. (如果你符合target的退貨政策,他們應該可以替你更換一台新的閱讀器) For further information on Target’s return policy, please contact them.  The limited 1-year manufacture warranty covers everything except for display damages due to personal usage.  Even though you may not have dropped the device, any form of light impact may have caused the internal crack of the screen(任何形式的輕微碰撞,均可能造成屏幕的內部破裂).  If you would like, we can provide you with proof showing the point of impact on the display if you send in your unit to us through an RMA process.  We can tell by looking at the screen whether the screen was damaged due to personal usage or not.  In your case, looking at the picture you provided (without opening up the unit at our repair center), it has enough damage to conclude that it was due to personal usage.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please email us back at any time.
Thanks & Regards,

從這個電郵:
  1. 我相信沒有任何一間公司的退貨政策會容許顧客退回壞了的商品;

iRiver Story HD is extremely fragile

I got a iRiver Story HD ebook reader from Target store (US$109 incl. tax) three weeks ago. It was a pretty neat machine and I enjoyed reading papers on it, I even bought a softcase to protect it from scratches.

Last week, after lunch, I connected the unit to my computer for file transfer, I saw this:

Since I was reading a paper on the iRiver Story HD right before lunch, and I just left it on my table, I was shocked to see the screen looked like this. I tried resetting it, although I was quite sure this won't help, and yes, it didn't work.

So I contacted iRiver support for warranty claim. Yet, the iRiver support asked me to return the unit to Target. I doubted if Target would accept a return of a broken machine, so I followed up with the iRiver support, and after emailing like 8 times, I finally got their reply as follow:

Dear iriver customer,

From this final email,
  1. I believe it is impossible to abide to any store's return policy with a broken unit (Please let me know which store accept return of a broken unit);
  2. iRiver admitted their iRiver Story HD is so fragile that "any form of light impact" can crack the screen. Despite I cannot think of what kind of light impact may have happened during the short period I was away for lunch (with no one else inside my room). Hmm, may be a gigantic fly landed on my machine and caused the light impact.
